What side am I on
Between the two sides, I would side with people who wants to put tax on the sugary drinks. Although people like having sugary drinks in their diet, it's not good for them to have it all the time. In the introduction of the article they say, " Health experts say the beverages contribute to health issues such as diabetes, obesity, and tooth decay. " Why I picked that side think putting the taxes on sugary drinks is a good idea. If you raise the price of something less people would want to buy that item. In the article, they quote, " They say that people gulp these drinks with out thinking, and take in empty calories." Also consuming a lot of the sugary drinks will lead to health issues. The supporting voters that want tax say that anding the tax with boost health in children and families. Voters in Berkeley and Philadelphia already put a penny-per-ounce tax on their drinks, so it influences people to cut back on the soda. In the article they talked about a woman that has a mother, sister, and brother-in-law that has diabetes and wouldn't stop drinking the sugary beverages, so this topic is very personal to her. Recognizing the Other Side Then there's the side of the article the doesn't want taxes on the drinks. They say putting taxes on the drinks will hurt the small businesses and customers. Yes, it might hurt small businesses, but not putting on tax will keep the constant drinking of the beverages up. The group of people that don't want tax, say that the owners will have to raise the prices. In the article they give an answer that says," The tax is on distributors and is not paid by customers who buy the drinks." Conclusion What these people don't see is the effect of drinking the soda. They don't see the health problems that are coming with drink the soda, so that's why I think there should tax the drinks. |
